Compatibility
sugardash displays glucose data from supported CGM services. It does not connect directly to CGM sensors. Instead, it retrieves glucose information that is already being shared to the internet through services such as Dexcom Share, LibreLinkUp, or Nightscout.
Understanding how this data moves from your body to sugardash can help determine whether your setup will work.
How Glucose Data Reaches sugardash
The process usually looks like this:
- CGM Sensor - Your CGM sensor measures glucose levels in your body.
- Receiver Device (usually a smartphone) - The sensor sends readings to a phone or receiver using Bluetooth.
- Cloud Sharing Service - The phone uploads glucose data to a service such as Dexcom Share, LibreLinkUp, or Nightscout.
- sugardash - sugardash connects to your Wi-Fi network and retrieves the glucose data from one of these services to display it on the screen.
Because sugardash relies on these cloud services, your CGM must already be sending glucose data to the internet through a compatible service.
Dexcom Compatibility
sugardash works with users of:
- Dexcom G6
- Dexcom G7
- Dexcom One+
sugardash retrieves glucose readings using Dexcom Share services.
Dexcom systems allow the sensor to connect to up to three devices simultaneously, which makes many setups compatible with sugardash.
For example:
- If your Dexcom sensor connects to an insulin pump, it can still connect to a smartphone running the Dexcom app.
- As long as the Dexcom app is connected and sharing data through Dexcom Share, sugardash can retrieve that data.
A smartphone running the Dexcom app is required for sugardash to work with Dexcom.
FreeStyle Libre Compatibility
sugardash works with FreeStyle Libre systems that share data through LibreLinkUp.
Libre setups typically require the sensor to be connected directly to a smartphone running the Libre app, which then shares data through LibreLinkUp.
Unlike Dexcom, Libre sensors cannot connect to both a phone and an insulin pump at the same time.
Because of this:
- If your Libre sensor is connected directly to a pump instead of a phone, LibreLinkUp will not receive data.
- Without LibreLinkUp data, sugardash will not be able to display readings.
In most cases, Libre users can use sugardash when their sensor is connected to a phone that shares data through LibreLinkUp.
Other CGMs Using Nightscout
Many sugardash users have CGMs that are not Dexcom or Libre.
In these cases, they often use Nightscout, an open-source project that allows glucose data from many systems to be shared online.
If you are able to view your glucose data in Nightscout, sugardash can usually display that data as well.
Some CGM systems people have used with sugardash via Nightscout include:
- Eversense
- Stelo
- Medtronic
- Other compatible Nightscout integrations
Because Nightscout is an independent open-source project, we recommend visiting the Nightscout community documentation to learn more about setup options.
